Why was my direct deposit returned to my employer?

If your paycheck didn’t arrive, it might’ve been sent back to your employer. Here’s why that can happen—and what you can do next.

Updated today

Why deposits get returned

  • Incorrect info
Double-check that your Atlas account and routing numbers are correct in your payroll or benefits portal.

  • Name doesn’t match
The deposit must be in your name. Payments from someone else’s account may be rejected.

  • Account closed or restricted
If your account wasn’t active when the deposit was sent, it may have been returned.

  • Business name
If the name on the deposit is a business name rather than that of the account holder, we may return the deposit. Atlas accounts are for individuals and personal use only.

What to do next

  1. Contact your employer or payer
Ask if the deposit was returned and confirm the account info they used. If needed, update your Atlas details in their system.

  2. Check your account status
If you think your account was closed or restricted in error, reach out to us in the Atlas app—we’re here to help.

  3. Re-send your deposit
Once everything’s confirmed and your account is active, your employer or provider can try sending the deposit again.
